What żeby does

One little word covers 'in order to', 'so that', and 'want someone to' - three things English builds differently.

Purpose: Uczę się, żeby zdać egzamin - I study (in order) to pass.
Wanting someone else to act: Chcę, żebyś przyszedł - I want you to come.
English has no direct equivalent of that second one - 'I want that you come' is exactly how Polish thinks.
aby = żeby, one notch more formal. You'll see it in emails and official texts.

Uczę się polskiego, żeby rozmawiać z sąsiadami.

I'm learning Polish to talk with my neighbours.

Chcę, żebyś przyszedł na moje urodziny.

I want you to come to my birthday.

Same subject: żeby + infinitive

When the same person does both halves, keep it simple - infinitive.

Pracuję dużo, żeby zarobić na wakacje - I work a lot to earn for holidays. (I work, I earn.)
Dzwonię, żeby zapytać o godziny otwarcia - I'm calling to ask about opening hours.
Negative purpose works the same way: Mówię cicho, żeby nie obudzić dziecka - so as not to wake the child.

Wyszedłem wcześniej, żeby zdążyć na pociąg.

I left earlier to make the train.

Mówię cicho, żeby nie obudzić dziecka.

I'm speaking quietly so as not to wake the child.

Different subjects: żeby grows endings

When someone else should do it, żeby conjugates - the same endings as gdyby.

ty	żebyś	Chcę, żebyś wiedział.
on / ona	żeby	Proszę, żeby zaczekał.
my	żebyśmy	Chcą, żebyśmy przyszli.
wy	żebyście	Chcemy, żebyście wiedzieli.

And just like gdyby, the verb after it takes the past form: żebyś przyszedł (to a man) / przyszła (to a woman) - even though nothing past is happening.

The verbs that trigger it

A small club of verbs almost always hands off to żeby when another person is involved.

prosić	to ask / request	Proszę, żebyś był punktualny.
powiedzieć / mówić	to tell (someone to do)	Powiedz mu, żeby zadzwonił.
zależeć (mi na tym)	to care / matter	Zależy mi, żeby wszystko było gotowe.
woleć	to prefer	Wolę, żebyśmy zostali w domu.

Telling someone to do something = powiedzieć + żeby: Powiedz jej, żeby przyszła - literally 'tell her that she should come'.
