Zawody (Professions)

How professions change for groups of men (the 'oni' plural)

Grammar A2

Professions & the 'oni' plural

When a group of professionals includes at least one man, the noun takes a special ending.

  • Adjectives just take -i or -y. Nouns are more varied: -owie, -e, -cy, -rzy.
  • The ending you choose depends almost entirely on the last letter of the singular word.
  • Women-only groups ('one') are easier: usually add -ki (nauczycielki, lekarki, kelnerki).
Gdzie są lekarze?
Where are the doctors?

Pattern 1: the prestigious -owie

Many modern, technical, or 'boss' titles take the -owie ending.

GroupEndingExample

engineerinżynier → inżynierowieTo są świetni inżynierowie.
bossszef → szefowieSzefowie mają dzisiaj wolne.
professorprofesor → profesorowieCi profesorowie uczą na uniwersytecie.
Inżynierowie i menedżerowie pracują razem.

Pattern 2: the soft -e

Words ending in -arz, -erz, and -iel simply add -e.

Never say 'lekarzy' or 'nauczycieli' in Nominative (subject) - those are Accusative/Genitive forms!
Lekarze mają dużo pracy.
Doctors have a lot of work.

Pattern 3: -ik / -yk → -icy / -ycy

A strict rule for almost all nouns ending in -ik or -yk.

Words ending in -sta or -t undergo heavy softening.

Feminine professions: the easy side

For women, professions usually take -ka in the singular, -ki in the plural.

GroupEndingExample
female teachernauczycielka → nauczycielkiNauczycielki są w szkole.
female doctorlekarka → lekarkiLekarki pomagają pacjentom.
female waiterkelnerka → kelnerkiKelnerki pracują wieczorem.
Some professions in modern Polish are used in both grammatical genders for women (pani doktor, pani inżynier) - this is stylistic, not incorrect.
Nasze lekarki są bardzo miłe.
Our (female) doctors are very nice.
