What -bym does

It turns a blunt statement into a polite, soft, or hypothetical one. This is the politeness engine of Polish.

Chcę kawę. = I want a coffee. Correct, but blunt.
Chciałbym kawę. = I'd like a coffee. This is what people actually say.
It also carries English 'would': Zrobiłbym to inaczej. = I'd do it differently.
Use it for requests, offers, suggestions, and soft refusals.

Chciałbym zamówić kawę.

I'd like to order a coffee. (man speaking)

Chciałabym zamówić kawę.

I'd like to order a coffee. (woman speaking)

You already know every piece: it's the past tense stem + -by- + a person ending.

Take the past form: chciał- (m) / chciała- (f).
Add -by plus the ending: chciałbym, chciałbyś, chciałby.
Because it sits on the past stem, it is gendered exactly like the past tense.

Four patterns cover almost every everyday situation.

Notice Czy mógłby pan...? - pan takes the he-form, so it's mógłby, not mógłbyś. Formal address and the conditional stack neatly.

One quirk worth knowing, because it's how 'if' sentences work.

Normally the ending sits on the verb: Chciałbym to zrobić.
After gdyby and żeby, it hops onto that word instead: Chciałbym, żebyś przyszedł.
Gdybym miał czas... = If I had time... - this is the standard 'if' opener.
The verb after it goes to the past form: gdybym miał, żebyś przyszedł.

Gdybym miał czas, poszedłbym z tobą.

If I had time, I'd go with you.

Chciałbym, żebyś przyszedł.

I'd like you to come.

The conditional is also how you decline without slamming a door.

Wolałbym nie. = I'd rather not.
Nie chciałbym przeszkadzać. = I wouldn't want to intrude.
Mogłoby być lepiej. = It could be better. (a soft complaint)
Compare the register: Powtórz! (Repeat!) → Czy mógłby pan powtórzyć? (Could you repeat?)

Wolałabym nie, dziękuję.

I'd rather not, thank you.
