Two ways to compare

Polish has a short road and a long road - the adjective decides which one you take.

Short, common adjectives add -szy: stary → starszy (older), młody → młodszy (younger).
Long adjectives and participle-like ones use bardziej: bardziej interesujący, bardziej zmęczony.
Rule of thumb: if the adjective feels basic and everyday, try -szy first. If it's three-plus syllables or ends in -ony / -ący, reach for bardziej.
Never both at once: bardziej starszy is the classic learner error.

Mój brat jest starszy.

My brother is older.

Ta książka jest bardziej interesująca.

This book is more interesting.

The regular -szy family

The ending often softens or swaps the last consonant - patterns you'll start hearing everywhere.

stary → starszy	older	Jestem starszy od brata.
młody → młodszy	younger	Ona jest młodsza ode mnie.
tani → tańszy	cheaper	Ten sklep jest tańszy.
drogi → droższy	more expensive	Taksówka jest droższa.
wysoki → wyższy	taller / higher	On jest wyższy niż ja.
długi → dłuższy	longer	Dni są coraz dłuższe.
łatwy → łatwiejszy	easier	Polski jest łatwiejszy, niż myślisz.
trudny → trudniejszy	harder	Egzamin był trudniejszy niż rok temu.

Notice -ki / -oki drop before the ending: wysoki → wyż-szy, not wysokiszy. The comparative still declines like a normal adjective: starsza siostra, starsze miasto.

The five irregulars you can't skip

The most common adjectives are also the most irregular - exactly like English good → better.

dobry → lepszy	good → better	Ta kawa jest lepsza.
zły → gorszy	bad → worse	Pogoda jest dziś gorsza.
duży → większy	big → bigger	Potrzebuję większego mieszkania.
mały → mniejszy	small → smaller	Wolę mniejsze miasto.
lekki → lżejszy	light → lighter	Ta torba jest lżejsza.

These five carry half of daily conversation. If you memorise nothing else from this lesson, memorise lepszy / gorszy / większy / mniejszy.

The superlative: just add naj-

Take the comparative you already built and glue naj- on the front. Done.

starszy → najstarszy (the oldest), lepszy → najlepszy (the best), gorszy → najgorszy (the worst).
With bardziej the naj- lands on bardziej: najbardziej interesujący.
Superlatives decline too: najlepsza kawa w mieście, najstarsze miasto w Polsce.

To najlepsza kawiarnia w Warszawie.

This is the best café in Warsaw.

Zima to najgorsza pora roku.

Winter is the worst season.

Than: niż or od?

Both mean 'than'. They just demand different grammar afterwards - pick whichever you can build fastest.

niż + Nominative - simply continue the sentence: On jest wyższy niż ja.
od + Genitive - the noun changes case: On jest wyższy od brata.
With 'me' the od-version has a special form: wyższy ode mnie.
Both are equally natural - Poles switch between them freely.

Kawa jest tańsza niż herbata.

Coffee is cheaper than tea.

Kawa jest tańsza od herbaty.

Coffee is cheaper than tea.

Comparing adverbs: szybciej, lepiej

How you do something compares too - and the most common ones are irregular.

dobrze → lepiej	better	Dziś czuję się lepiej.
źle → gorzej	worse	Wczoraj było gorzej.
dużo → więcej	more	Potrzebuję więcej czasu.
mało → mniej	less	Mam mniej pracy niż wczoraj.
często → częściej	more often	Powinienem częściej ćwiczyć.

Superlative works the same way: naj + comparative = najlepiej, najszybciej, najczęściej.

Set phrases built on comparison

These frozen patterns show up constantly - learn them as whole chunks.

coraz + comparative	more and more	Mówisz coraz lepiej po polsku!
im..., tym...	the..., the...	Im więcej ćwiczysz, tym lepiej mówisz.
jak naj + superlative	as ... as possible	Przyjdź jak najszybciej.
coś jest coraz gorsze	getting worse	Pogoda jest coraz gorsza.
