Describing people: the 'oni' plural for character traits

When describing a group, adjectives must match the gender - and Polish has TWO plurals to choose from.
- One group (women, animals, things): just add -e. miły → miłe
- Oni group (with men): add -i or -y, often changing the consonant before it.
- Getting this right is the mark of natural Polish.
Te kobiety są miłe.
These women are nice.
Ci panowie są mili.
These men are nice.
Pattern 1: -ty → -ci
When an adjective ends in -ty, the t softens to c and takes -i for 'oni'.

| hardworking | pracowity → pracowici | Moi koledzy są <b>pracowici</b>. |
| open | otwarty → otwarci | Jesteśmy <b>otwarci</b> na pomysły. |
Compare with the 'one' plural: Te dziewczyny są pracowite (women) vs Ci chłopcy są pracowici (men).
Ci studenci są bardzo pracowici.
These students are very hardworking.
Pattern 2: -ry → -rzy
The r softens to rz - one of the most important adjective patterns.

| good | dobry → dobrzy | To są <b>dobrzy</b> ludzie. |
| smart | mądry → mądrzy | Moi rodzice są <b>mądrzy</b>. |
'Dobry' and 'mądry' are extremely common in daily speech. Master these first.
Zawsze byliśmy szczerzy.
We have always been honest.
Pattern 3: -ły → -li
The hard ł softens into a plain l.

| shy | nieśmiały → nieśmiali | Chłopcy byli <b>nieśmiali</b>. |
| merry | wesoły → weseli | Jesteśmy dzisiaj <b>weseli</b>. |
For 'wesoły → weseli', the 'o' also shifts to an 'e' to make pronunciation smoother.
Nasi nowi sąsiedzi są bardzo mili.
Our new neighbors are very nice.
Pattern 4: -ki / -ski to -cy / -scy
These are the trickiest transformations, but very common.

| tall | wysoki → wysocy | Koszykarze są <b>wysocy</b>. |
| Polish | polski → polscy | <b>Polscy</b> studenci są mądrzy. |
The -ski ending is extremely common in nationality-based adjectives (polski, angielski, francuski). All follow this pattern.
Moi bracia są bardzo wysocy i towarzyscy.
My brothers are very tall and sociable.
The easy ones: just add -i
Many consonants don't need to change - they just add -i.

Quick reference: how to tell
Ask yourself two questions before choosing the ending.
- 1. Is there a man in the group? If no → use 'one' form (-e).
- 2. If yes, what does the adjective end in? Apply the pattern for that ending.
- Same rule applies to ten → ci, mój → moi, jaki → jacy.
