Przeczenie (Negation)

Nigdy nic nikomu nie mówię - why Polish stacks its negatives

Grammar B1

nie goes before the verb. Always.

One position, no exceptions, no contractions to memorise.

Nie rozumiem tego pytania.
I don't understand this question.
Ona nie pracuje w piątki.
She doesn't work on Fridays.

Negatives stack - and they must

In English two negatives cancel. In Polish they team up, and skipping one is an error.

Nikt nic nie powiedział.
Nobody said anything.
Nigdy nigdzie nie wychodzę wieczorem.
I never go out anywhere in the evening.

The ni- family

The negative words all start with ni- - and they decline through the cases like everything else.

GroupEndingExample
nikt → nikogo, nikomunobodyNie znam tu nikogo.
After nie było, the person goes to the Genitive: the genitive-of-negation you met in Dopełniacz, working overtime.

Negation changes the case

The Dopełniacz reminder: a negated verb pushes its object from Accusative into Genitive.

Nie mam dzisiaj czasu.
I don't have time today.
W lodówce nie ma mleka.
There's no milk in the fridge.

ani... ani, jeszcze nie, już nie

Three finishing touches that make your negatives sound native.

GroupEndingExample

not yetjeszcze nieJeszcze nie jadłem.
not anymorejuż nieJuż tam nie pracuję.
not at allw ogóle nieW ogóle nie rozumiem.

jeszcze nie vs już nie is the pair worth drilling: jeszcze nie = hasn't happened yet; już nie = happened, but stopped. Jeszcze nie jem (I'm not eating yet) vs Już nie jem (I've stopped eating).
