Narzędnik (Instrumental)
The 'with / by' case: means, transport, and being someone
Grammar A1What the Instrumental does
The Instrumental shows the means or the identity. It answers kim? czym? (with whom? with what?).
- Tools: Piszę długopisem. - I'm writing with a pen.
- Transport: Jadę autobusem. - I'm going by bus.
- Identity: Jestem lekarzem. - I am a doctor.
Piję kawę z mlekiem.
I drink coffee with milk.
Interesuję się muzyką.
I'm interested in music.
Signals that trigger Instrumental
A short, memorable list of triggers.
- Być + profession/role: Jestem studentem.
- Transport: jadę autobusem, pociągiem, samochodem
- Z = with: kawa z mlekiem
- Interesować się, zajmować się + Instr: Interesuję się sportem.
- Przed, za, nad, pod, między + Instr (location)
'Z' has two meanings: with (Instrumental) and from (Genitive). Context tells you which: z mlekiem (with milk, Instr) vs z Polski (from Poland, Gen).
Rozmawiam z Anną.
I'm talking with Anna.
Masculine & Neuter singular: -em
One ending, two genders - the simplest part of the Instrumental.
| Group | Ending | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Masculine | -em | student → studentem, kot → kotem |
| Neuter | -em | okno → oknem, dziecko → dzieckiem |
| After k, g | -iem | pociąg → pociągiem, Polak → Polakiem |
After k or g, insert an i: pociąg → pociągiem, not pociągem. This preserves the soft sound.
Jadę pociągiem.
I'm going by train.
Piszę długopisem.
I'm writing with a pen.
Feminine singular: -ą
Another instantly recognizable Polish ending.
| Group | Ending | Example |
|---|---|---|
| -a → -ą | kobieta → kobietą | Rozmawiam z kobietą. |
| -a → -ą | kawa → kawą | z kawą i ciastem |
| -a → -ą | Anna → Anną | z Anną |
Feminine -a becomes -ą. It's the mirror image of the Accusative -ę. Both endings are hallmarks of Polish.
Kawa z mlekiem, proszę.
Coffee with milk, please.
Interesuję się fotografią.
I'm interested in photography.
Plural Instrumental: -ami
Almost universally -ami, regardless of gender.
| Group | Ending | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Masculine | -ami | studentami, kotami, pociągami |
| Feminine | -ami | kobietami, książkami |
| Neuter | -ami | oknami, dziećmi (!) |
A few very common words take -mi instead: dziećmi (children), ludźmi (people), braćmi (brothers), przyjaciółmi (friends), pieniędzmi (money). Memorize this short list.
Idę z przyjaciółmi.
I'm going with friends.
Being someone: profession & role
After być, Polish always uses Instrumental for profession, nationality, role.
- Jestem studentem. - I am a student. Feminine form: Jestem studentką.
- Ona jest lekarką. - She is a doctor.
- Chcę być inżynierem. - I want to be an engineer.
Compare: To jest lekarz (Nom - 'This is a doctor', pointing) vs Jestem lekarzem (Instr - 'I am a doctor', identifying). The pattern with to jest is the exception that stays in Nominative.
Mój tata jest kierowcą.
My dad is a driver.
Chciałabym być nauczycielką.
I would like to be a teacher.
Instrumental pronouns
Compact and common - you'll hear these constantly.
| Group | Ending | Example |
|---|---|---|
| with me | ze mną | Chodź ze mną. |
| with you (sg) | z tobą | Rozmawiam z tobą. |
| with him / her | z nim / z nią | z nim wczoraj |
| with us / with them | z nami / z nimi | z nami na kawie |
Notice ze mną - not 'z mną'. The extra 'e' makes it pronounceable.
Chcesz iść z nami?
Do you want to go with us?
