Jeśli i gdyby (Conditions)

Real ifs vs what-ifs - and the future tense English hides

Grammar B1

Two kinds of if

Polish splits 'if' by how real the situation is.

Jeśli masz czas, chodź z nami.
If you have time, come with us.
Gdybym miał czas, poszedłbym z wami.
If I had time, I would go with you.

The future English hides

The number-one error zone: English says 'if it rains' in the present. Polish says the future out loud.

Jeśli będzie ładna pogoda, pojedziemy nad jezioro.
If the weather is nice, we'll go to the lake.
Jeśli będziesz miał pytania, napisz do mnie.
If you have questions, write to me.

gdyby carries personal endings

gdyby conjugates like a verb - the ending tells you who, and the verb after it takes the past form.

The verb after gdyby- is in the past form and agrees with your gender: gdybym miał (a man) / gdybym miała (a woman) - the same -ł/-ła split as the normal past tense.

The other half: -bym in the result

A gdyby sentence usually answers with the conditional you know from Politeness: kupiłbym, poszłabym.

Gdybym miał pieniądze, kupiłbym samochód.
If I had money, I would buy a car.
Co byś zrobił, gdybyś wygrał milion?
What would you do if you won a million?

Chunks you'll hear daily - each one quietly follows the rules above.
