Celownik (Dative)
The 'to / for' case: indirect objects and how you feel
Grammar A1What the Dative does
The Dative marks the recipient - the person you give, tell, or show something to. It answers komu? czemu? (to whom?).
- Giving: Daję Ani prezent. - I'm giving Anna a gift.
- Telling: Mówię koledze prawdę. - I'm telling my colleague the truth.
- Helping: Pomagam mamie. - I'm helping mom.
Dziękuję koledze.
Thank you (to my colleague).
Kupię bratu książkę.
I'll buy my brother a book.
Signals that trigger Dative
Certain verbs always take a Dative object - just memorize the list.
- dawać / dać (to give)
- pomagać (to help)
- mówić / powiedzieć (to say to)
- dziękować (to thank)
- ufać (to trust), wierzyć (to believe)
- Feelings: jest mi zimno/gorąco/smutno - I feel cold/hot/sad
'Jest mi...' is one of the most common Dative constructions in daily speech. Master it and you can express emotions and physical states.
Jest mi zimno.
I'm cold. (lit: it's cold to me)
Pomagam mamie w kuchni.
I'm helping mom in the kitchen.
Masculine singular: -owi (usually)
Most masculine nouns take -owi, but a small group of common words take -u.
| Group | Ending | Example |
|---|
| Default: -owi | student → studentowi | Daję studentowi książkę. |
| Default: -owi | lekarz → lekarzowi | Dziękuję lekarzowi. |
| Exceptions: -u | brat → bratu, pan → panu | Powiem bratu. |
| Exceptions: -u | ojciec → ojcu, chłopiec → chłopcu | Kupię chłopcu prezent. |
These -u exceptions are all extremely common words, so you'll drill them naturally in daily speech.
Almost every masculine noun takes -owi. The main exceptions to memorize: brat, pan, ojciec, chłopiec, ksiądz, Bóg, kot, pies - all take -u.
Daję studentowi książkę.
I'm giving the student a book.
Powiem bratu.
I'll tell my brother.
Feminine singular: -e or -i
Feminine Dative often changes the final consonant - watch closely.
| Group | Ending | Example |
|---|
| Default | -e (with softening) | kobieta → kobiecie, siostra → siostrze |
| After k, g | -ce, -dze | Polka → Polce, koleżanka → koleżance |
| Soft ending | -i | kuchnia → kuchni, pani → pani |
The Dative causes consonant softening: t → ci, d → dzi, r → rz, k → c, g → dz. That's why 'kobieta' becomes 'kobiecie', not 'kobiete'.
Kupię siostrze prezent.
I'll buy my sister a gift.
Pomagam mamie.
I'm helping mom.
Neuter singular: -u
Neuter is easy in the Dative - almost always -u.
| Group | Ending | Example |
|---|
| -o → -u | dziecko → dziecku | Kupię dziecku lody. |
| -e → -u | pole → polu | Idę ku polu. |
| -ę → -ęciu | imię → imieniu | (rare) |
Daję dziecku zabawkę.
I'm giving the child a toy.
Plural Dative: -om
The easiest plural in all of Polish. One ending fits every gender.
| Group | Ending | Example |
|---|
| Masculine personal | -om | studentom, panom, kolegom |
| Masc. non-personal | -om | kotom, samochodom |
| Feminine | -om | kobietom, siostrom, książkom |
| Neuter | -om | dzieciom, oknom |
If you remember one ending in all of Polish grammar, make it plural Dative -om. It never varies.
Pomagam kolegom.
I'm helping my colleagues.
Kupuję prezenty dzieciom.
I'm buying gifts for the children.
